Own the end-to-end development of automated test systems for laser-based 4D sensing optics from lab concept to mass production.
About the role
Own the optical testers that screen incoming optical components and verify outgoing optical subsystems, from lab concept to mass production. The tested optics support laser-based 4D sensing and range from lenses and micro-optics to complete optical subsystems.
What you'll do
- Own optical testers from concept to mass production, including writing equipment specifications, leading design reviews with external test integrators, and running FAT and SAT at contract manufacturers.
- Develop measurement methods and lab prototypes by selecting instruments, designing opto-mechanical fixturing and motion, writing control software, and executing gauge R&R studies.
- Deliver incoming quality control (IQC) stations for lenses, micro-optics, optical windows, and optical subassemblies, as well as outgoing quality control (OQC) stations verifying alignment, optical power, transmittance, MTF, wavefront error, back focal distance, and stray light.
- Establish acceptance limits based on optical and opto-mechanical tolerances, aligning Cp/Cpk targets with optical design and quality engineering teams.
- Correlate subsystem results to 4D sensing metrics, including range accuracy and precision, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), signal intensity, and point-cloud quality.
- Replicate qualified testers across lines and sites at CM, OSAT, and final assembly partners while establishing tool-to-tool matching, MES connectivity, golden unit calibration standards, and SPC tracking.
What you'll need
- B.S. in optical engineering, photonics, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on test development experience).
- 5+ years of experience developing automated production test equipment for optical or optoelectronic products such as camera modules, lens assemblies, laser or photodetector modules, or lidar sensors.
- Hands-on factory-floor experience transitioning an optical tester from lab prototype to volume production at a CM, OSAT, or supplier site, including multi-station tool-to-tool matching.
- Demonstrated experience writing equipment specifications and managing external equipment builders or test integrators through FAT and SAT.
- Proficiency using optical test instruments including MTF or resolution benches, collimators, interferometers, optical power meters, beam profilers, and spectrometers or optical spectrum analyzers.
- Test automation programming in Python or LabVIEW (C++, C#, or MATLAB) for instrument control, motion control, data acquisition, and pass/fail logic.
- Working knowledge of measurement system analysis and statistical process control, including gauge R&R, Cp/Cpk, and SPC.
- Willingness to travel up to 25% to manufacturing sites in Asia.
Nice to have
- Test experience with lidar or laser transmitter and receiver optics, including frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) or coherent detection systems.
- Experience with camera and lens metrology such as distortion mapping, chief ray angle, focal length, and stray light/ghost image characterization.
- Experience with micro-optics or active alignment processes in production environments.
- Knowledge of MES integration, SECS/GEM, or shop-floor data collection protocols.
- Experience with machine vision, robotic or conveyor part handling, JMP or Minitab for data analysis, and SolidWorks for fixture design.
- Working relationships with contract manufacturing and OSAT partners in Taiwan or Southeast Asia.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in a related field.

How we counted: 1126 open Hardware Systems Engineering (AI ML Hardware) roles from 109 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 8 Nov 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
