Develop precision electro-optical metrology systems for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light sources.
About the role
The Senior Electro-Optical Systems Engineer develops precision optical and electro-optical metrology systems used to measure, characterize, and support the control of light production in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) sources. The role owns metrology subsystems from requirements definition through design, procurement, assembly, integration, testing, verification, and release.
What you'll do
- Translate equipment, system, and stakeholder requirements into metrology specifications, interface definitions, performance budgets, and verification plans. - Lead the definition, development, and integration of optical and electro-optical metrology systems enabling EUV source learning, power scaling, and stable operation. - Perform photon-budget, radiometric, and signal-to-noise ratio calculations accounting for source output, optical transmission, detector response, and system noise. - Conduct optical performance, tolerancing, stray-light, beam-propagation, alignment, calibration, and image- or signal-quality analyses. - Integrate optical hardware with low-voltage electronics, motors, analog sensors, precision mechanisms, controls, software, and thermal-management systems. - Develop laboratory test benches, diagnostic tools, fixtures, calibration methods, test procedures, and automated data-analysis routines.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree with 12+ years, Master's degree with 8+ years, or PhD with 4+ years of relevant experience in optical engineering, photonics, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, biomedical engineering, or imaging science. - Experience developing optical, electro-optical, or metrology systems for semiconductor equipment, scientific instrumentation, aerospace, medical devices, or precision-hardware applications. - Demonstrated technical ownership of an optical system or major subsystem from requirements definition through integration, testing, and verification. - Hands-on experience with optical alignment, laser systems, optical test equipment, sensors, detectors, cameras, or signal-detection systems. - Experience performing photon-budget, radiometric, signal-chain, and signal-to-noise ratio calculations. - Experience with data analysis and visualization using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or equivalent tools.

How we counted: 1058 open Hardware Systems Engineering (AI ML Hardware) roles from 102 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 29 Oct 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
