About the role
This role involves contributing to the design and development of advanced hardware for quantum computing systems. You will work hands-on with complex cryogenic, vacuum, and electromechanical systems.
What you'll do
- Design, prototype, test, and improve mechanical components and system subassemblies for complex electromechanical systems.
- Develop and maintain CAD models, detailed drawings, bills of materials, and supporting documentation.
- Apply mechanical engineering principles, including tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA).
- Evaluate thermal design constraints for mechanical and electromechanical hardware, including CTE mismatch, bolted-joint behavior, heat-transfer paths, electronics enclosure cooling, and cryogenic component thermalization, using hand calculations, test data, FEA/CFD, and other simulation tools.
- Support hands-on assembly, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of prototype and system hardware; document test results, assembly methods, design changes, and lessons learned.
- Collaborate with internal teams and suppliers to develop reliable, practical mechanical solutions and resolve fabrication, fit, assembly, and performance issues.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent training and experience.
- 3+ years of professional experience in mechanical design or mechanical engineering.
- Solid modeling experience in a professional CAD system.
- Experience creating and interpreting detailed mechanical drawings, including tolerances, fits, and GD&T.
- Proficiency designing machined and sheet-metal components.
- Demonstrated hands-on mechanical aptitude through lab work, fabrication, equipment maintenance, machining, or similar practical experience.
