Intern, Systems Software Engineering
Originally posted 29 October 2026 by the employer.
About the role
Develop systems software for memory and storage pools that support reinforcement-learning post-training of large language models. The role involves building a prototype using fabric-attached memory and SSD pools within the Samsung Global Ecosystem Team (GOST).
What you'll do
- Profile the RL post-training loop to identify memory-capacity limits, data-transfer overhead, storage stalls, and GPU idle time.
- Develop a runtime feature that coordinates bounded memory staging, asynchronous storage writes, prefetching, or capacity allocation across workers.
- Integrate runtime features with an existing RL framework using its training and checkpoint interfaces.
- Preserve snapshot consistency, policy-version provenance, buffer ownership, and durable checkpoint publication during asynchronous operations.
- Compare memory-only, storage-only, and combined pool configurations using training throughput, GPU-hours, local-memory usage, and restart performance.
- Identify resource management issues on post-RL workloads and resolve them in the host OS.
What you'll need
- Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Computer Science with at least 1 academic quarter or semester remaining.
- Programming experience in C, C++, or Rust, alongside Python or shell scripting for experiments and automation.
- Understanding of operating systems, memory management, concurrency, and computer architecture.
- Experience developing and debugging on Linux, using Git, and communicating technical results through coursework or research projects.
Nice to have
- Experience with CXL, NUMA, Device-DAX, mmap, shared-memory programming, or memory allocators.
- Experience with GPU programming, CUDA, DMA, or profiling memory and data-transfer performance.
- Knowledge of distributed systems, cache management, vLLM, SGLang, LLM inference, or open-source development.

How we counted: 686 open Systems Software Engineering (Systems Software) roles from 71 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 29 Oct 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
