About the role
As a Build Engineer at Etched, you will own internal rack and subassembly builds end to end, managing planning, parts, tooling, execution on the floor, and troubleshooting. The role bridges hands-on engineering and program execution across mechanical, electrical, thermal, test, and lab operations teams as hardware transitions from early builds into NPI and production.
What you'll do
- Own internal rack and subassembly builds from kickoff to delivery, managing schedules, material readiness, staffing, and on-time completion.
- Run clear-to-build checks against the BOM, coordinating with inventory and supply chain teams to resolve part shortages.
- Review CAD models and drawings with design engineers to identify manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability issues early.
- Design or specify required fixtures, tooling, and build stations for the team.
- Integrate mechanical, thermal, power, and electrical subsystems into full rack assemblies, and develop and execute corresponding test procedures.
- Write and maintain build procedures, work instructions, and travelers, transitioning assemblies from development builds to production.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, or aerospace engineering, physics, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Hands-on experience building hardware.
- Proven track record of owning a build or hardware program end to end and delivering it on time.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes, engineering drawings, and GD&T.
- Demonstrated experience working on the floor alongside build technicians.
Nice to have
- Experience with server, rack, data center, or other electronics hardware integration.
- Background building hardware at high rates in aerospace, automotive, or consumer electronics.
- Experience designing fixtures and tooling in CAD.
- Experience with PLM, MES, or ERP systems such as Teamcenter.
- Experience scaling builds from prototype to volume production.
- Scripting experience with Python, Excel, or other tools for build tracking and analysis.

How we counted: 1062 open Hardware Systems Engineering (AI ML Hardware) roles from 100 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 2 Nov 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
