About the role
Arm is seeking a Staff Robotics Research Engineer to join its Robotics Research Lab in Austin to conduct research across intelligent robotic capabilities and systems. This hands-on role focuses on developing, integrating, and evaluating robotics methods across physical platforms and simulation to translate research insights into requirements for future compute and software platforms.
What you'll do
- Conduct original research in robotics domains including robot learning, perception, planning, control, optimization, safety, formal methods, robot systems, or mechatronics. - Develop methods for intelligent robots to perceive, reason, plan, learn, and act in real-world environments. - Build, integrate, and evaluate research prototypes on physical robotic platforms and in simulation. - Investigate architectures and abstractions that combine classical robotics, learning-based methods, foundation models, and agentic AI. - Identify system-level bottlenecks and translate robotics research insights into requirements for future compute and software platforms. - Publish research at robotics, AI, and systems venues while defining technical directions for the lab.
What you'll need
- PhD or equivalent research experience in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field. - Strong research expertise in at least one area relevant to intelligent robotic systems. - Experience implementing and evaluating algorithms on robotic systems, relevant physical systems, or high-fidelity simulation. - Strong programming skills in C++ and/or Python. - Demonstrated publication record or equivalent evidence of research impact. - Demonstrated ability to formulate and solve open-ended research problems and independently drive research projects.
Nice to have
- Experience with robot learning, reinforcement learning, imitation learning, or embodied AI. - Experience with vision-language-action models (VLAs), vision-language models (VLMs), world models, or diffusion models. - Knowledge of task and motion planning, search, optimization, or decision making under uncertainty. - Expertise in robot control, whole-body control, MPC, trajectory optimization, adaptive control, or learning-based control. - Experience with robotics perception, SLAM, sensor fusion, semantic mapping, spatial reasoning, or multi-modal sensing. - Experience with safety-critical robotics, runtime assurance, Control Barrier Functions, formal methods, verification, or specification-driven behavior. - Familiarity with heterogeneous and embedded compute, including CPU/GPU/NPU/MCU platforms.
