About the role
This role leads the reliability strategy and qualification of optical engines used in transceiver products. The optical engine subsystem combines optical components such as lasers and photodetectors with ASICs that include driver and receiver circuits.
What you'll do
- Design, document, and execute an end-to-end reliability qualification plan for optical engines aligned with standards such as Telcordia GR-468 and JEDEC JESD47/JESD22.
- Define test matrices, sample sizes, and stress tests including temperature cycling, high-temperature operating life (HTOL), damp heat, mechanical shock/vibration, ESD, and moisture sensitivity.
- Evaluate reliability risks and interaction effects across laser/LED/PD degradation mechanisms and driver IC, TIA, and CDR circuits.
- Coordinate with internal or external test labs, manage sample builds, track progress, and drive qualification milestones.
- Lead root cause investigations for reliability failures alongside design, process, and failure analysis teams to implement corrective actions.
- Analyze reliability data using Weibull analysis, Arrhenius modeling, and activation energy extraction to project field lifetime and FIT rates.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of reliability engineering experience across both optical components and integrated circuits.
- Hands-on experience building and executing qualification plans for optoelectronic or semiconductor products such as transceivers or optical modules.
- Working knowledge of industry reliability standards such as Telcordia GR-468-CORE, JEDEC, MIL-STD-883, or AEC-Q100.
- Failure analysis skills or collaboration experience with FA teams using tools such as decapsulation, SEM, EDX, and curve tracing.
Nice to have
- Direct experience with laser diode, LED, and photodetector reliability degradation mechanisms such as dark line defects, facet degradation, catastrophic optical damage, and dark current drift.
- Experience qualifying transceiver modules (SFP, QSFP, OSFP form factors) or optical engines/TOSA-ROSA assemblies.
- Familiarity with driver IC, TIA, and CDR reliability considerations in co-packaged or closely integrated optical-electrical systems.
- Experience working with customers on qualification sign-off and defending qualification reports.
- Six Sigma, CRE (Certified Reliability Engineer), or equivalent certification.

How we counted: 518 open Reliability Engineering (Reliability Engineering) roles from 78 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 8 Nov 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Process, Fab & Equipment family row.
