About the role
This role drives the development and validation of III-V semiconductor lasers and amplifiers against system requirements. You will characterize laser performance and support OSAT and foundry activities for assembly and fabrication within an integrated photonic sensor.
What you'll do
- Own III-V R&D characterization of lasers, amplifiers, and heterogeneously integrated III-V and Silicon Photonic subsystems, including phase noise, linewidth, and RIN.
- Own III-V R&D test development, expand test coverage, and troubleshoot lab setups and design issues.
- Perform simulations in Simulink or Python-equivalent environments to support device characterization and data analysis.
- Support III-V layout and tape-out, participate in design reviews, and hybrid-integrate III-V components with SiPh components.
- Work with OSAT and foundry partners on assembly and fabrication, and support transitioning laser components into high-volume manufacturing.
- Author detailed design documentation and technical specifications.
What you'll need
- Master's or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field, with 3-5 years of industry experience in III-V laser development.
- Demonstrated experience translating system requirements into laser specifications.
- Hands-on experience with optical lab equipment, including photodetectors, modulators, optical amplifiers, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, motorized stages, and lock-in amplifiers.
- Experience with optical system modeling of complex photonic components and software development in Python, C, C++, or MATLAB.
- Working knowledge of silicon photonics, passive optical components, coherent communications, signal integration, integrated optics, and semiconductor physics.
Nice to have
- Deep understanding of high-power semiconductor lasers, low-linewidth laser systems, and optical amplifiers.
- Experience with new product transfer from R&D to operations, plus working with foundry and OSAT vendors.
- Background in photonic sensing, coherent communications, or lidar.
- Familiarity with multi-chip packages, silicon photonics, and hybrid or heterogeneous integration of III-V components.

How we counted: 161 open Optical/Photonics IC Design (Photonics) roles from 35 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 8 Nov 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there. Figures refresh nightly.
