Internship - Droplet Generation Research

ASML San Diego, CA, United States Full-time 5 hours ago
Manufacturing & Equipment Engineering

Research droplet generation physics and laser produced plasma architectures for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light sources.

Originally posted 3 November 2026 by the employer.

About the role

This internship focuses on droplet generation research within the source research team to support extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light sources based on laser produced plasma (LPP). The role centers on investigating, testing, and controlling molten tin droplets used as fuel for high-power EUV generation.

What you'll do

  • Identify key scientific learning objectives and design experiments to advance the EUV generation process.
  • Demonstrate system-wide performance targets to meet future technology roadmaps.
  • Develop and execute system and subsystem performance tests, analyze test results, and extract actionable knowledge from sub-module to full-system levels.
  • Troubleshoot tin delivery subsystems, ultra-high vacuum systems, and optical modules on experimental test benches.
  • Document findings and communicate knowledge to engineering and product development teams to guide product improvements and node releases.
  • Deliver on research objectives independently and collaboratively, covering capability demonstration and performance characterization.

What you'll need

  • Currently pursuing a PhD or MS degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent field.
  • Understanding of scientific methods to design and execute research experiments with limited oversight.
  • Ability to manage experimental research projects involving multiple stakeholders and constraints.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing a DOE and building experimental test setups, including layout, rapid prototyping, metrology selection, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with microfluidics, liquid jet breakup, droplet coalescence, piezoelectricity, or acoustics.
  • Experience with high-pressure applications such as water jet cutting, jet breakup, and nozzle design.
  • Experience with ceramics and the design and fabrication of ceramic components.
  • Experience with droplet formation, sprays, common-rail diesel, or injectors.
  • Experience with ultrasonic cleaning, chemical cleaning, or etching.
  • Experience with experimental data collection and analysis, including familiarity with MATLAB, Python, or NI LabVIEW data acquisition systems.
  • Coursework in data analytics, acoustics, fluid flow, or high-strength materials.
