About the role
Design, build, and maintain the software tools that enable development, testing, manufacturing, and deployment of embedded systems at scale. This role focuses on internal tools, workflows, and infrastructure supporting firmware, driver, and system engineers across development, validation, factory, and production environments.
What you'll do
- Design, develop, and maintain embedded software development and test tools supporting chip, SoC, and board bring-up, as well as RTOS- and Linux-based embedded systems.
- Build tools for flashing, provisioning, configuration, calibration, recovery, debugging, and diagnostics interfacing with JTAG/SWD, bootloaders, kernels, and target-side firmware.
- Build automation for build, test, and deployment pipelines, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and factory test systems.
- Develop simulation, emulation, and test harnesses to enable iteration without physical hardware across MCUs, CPUs, DSPs, NPUs, GPUs, and custom ASICs.
- Improve embedded system observability through logging, metrics, tracing, and crash analysis while supporting factory and field-debug workflows.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience developing software tools for embedded or systems environments.
- Strong software engineering skills in Python, C and/or C++, and shell scripting (Bash or similar).
- Solid understanding of embedded systems fundamentals, including boot flows, memory, interrupts, concurrency, and RTOS- and Linux-based systems.
- Experience with embedded build systems, cross-compilation toolchains, and flashing workflows.
- Familiarity with firmware and driver development, bring-up processes, and debugging across hardware and software boundaries.
Nice to have
- Experience with embedded Linux environments (Yocto, Buildroot, cross-compilation toolchains, kernel build and configuration workflows).
- Experience with RTOS-based systems (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, QNX, ThreadX).
- Familiarity with hardware debug and trace tools such as JTAG/SWD, OpenOCD, GDB, Trace32, and Lauterbach.
- Experience building HIL, SIL, and automated factory test frameworks, or using emulation and simulation tools (QEMU, virtual platforms).
- Experience with CI/CD systems for embedded software and supporting manufacturing or factory test environments.
- Experience working across multiple processor architectures (ARM Cortex-M/R/A, DSPs, NPUs, GPUs, custom accelerators) or knowledge of CUDA and GPU programming.

How we counted: 764 open Embedded Firmware Engineering (Systems Software) roles from 86 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 8 Nov 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
