About the role
As Director, Mechanical Engineering, you will be the primary owner and technical authority for all mechanical aspects of product development, spanning design, simulation, and manufacturing. You will build and guide a focused team developing hardware for MEMS-based silicon photonics optical circuit switches.
What you'll do
- Design precision mechanical components, assemblies, enclosures, mounting structures, fiber management solutions, and thermal hardware supporting MEMS and silicon photonic devices.
- Lead structural, thermal, and vibration simulations using FEA tools, analyzing stress, strain, modal behavior, and long-term reliability.
- Drive mechanical designs across the full product lifecycle from initial concept through prototyping, validation, and volume production.
- Manage the build, assembly, and evaluation of engineering prototypes while conducting root-cause analysis on mechanical failures.
- Partner with external vendors and manufacturing partners on precision machined, sheet metal, molded, and fabricated parts.
- Oversee first article inspections, part approvals, manufacturing documentation, and engineering change orders (ECOs).
What you'll need
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical design and analysis, with at least 3 years in a lead or management role.
- Experience designing mechanical systems for the telecom or data center industry.
- Expert-level proficiency with 3D-CAD software (such as SolidWorks, Creo, or Inventor) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (such as Ansys, SolidWorks Simulation, or COMSOL).
- Demonstrated expertise in thermal management, analytical mechanical design, low-stress mounting, shock, and vibration for electronic systems.
- Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, including precision machining, extrusion, sheet metal, molding technologies, and vendor management.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of industry standards for shock, vibration, and thermal testing (such as Telcordia).
- Experience with advanced materials and adhesives for specialized applications.

How we counted: 1103 open Hardware Systems Engineering (AI ML Hardware) roles from 111 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 5 Nov 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
