US Fab Hiring: Where the Process and Equipment Jobs Are
Intel confirmed on October 21 that construction and tool installation are underway at Fab 62 in Chandler, Arizona, with operations expected to begin by the end of 2028. The update comes directly from Intel.
For engineers following these projects, the equipment suppliers deserve as much attention as the chipmakers. Of the 2,756 active US manufacturing and equipment engineering postings in our job index, 1,735 are at semiconductor equipment vendors. That’s about 63%.
Where the openings are
Across our job index, current US postings include:
| Type of work | Active US postings |
|---|---|
| Process and device engineering | 918 |
| Manufacturing and equipment engineering | 2,756 |
| Facilities, construction and technician roles | 1,215 |
Equipment companies including Applied Materials, Lam Research and KLA account for most of the manufacturing and equipment engineering group. These positions cover work across equipment development, installation, service and maintenance.
Existing sites account for substantial hiring
Arizona has the latest Intel construction news, but Oregon has more of its current openings. Our job index has 237 Intel postings in Oregon, compared with 96 in Arizona and 17 in New Mexico. Those counts cover all positions at each location.
Intel describes Oregon as its center for advanced logic research, development and manufacturing. Its New Mexico operations focus on advanced packaging. The hiring extends across those established operations alongside the new Arizona fab.
Texas has a similar mix of employers. Texas Instruments has 320 active postings across the state, while Applied Materials has 199 in Austin. Both figures include positions beyond process and equipment engineering.
How long positions have been open
Active manufacturing and process engineering postings have a median age of 58 days, compared with 84 days for IC design and architecture positions.
The larger finding is the number of employers involved. Fab hiring includes the companies making chips and the suppliers building and supporting their equipment. In our job index, those suppliers account for nearly two-thirds of US manufacturing and equipment engineering postings.
