About the role
The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer (E) is responsible for developing mechanical design solutions across the full product lifecycle from requirements definition through manufacturing release. The role supports the Film and Scatterometry Technology (FaST) Division's portfolio of optical metrology products, including film thickness, optical critical dimension (CD), composition, and resistivity measurement systems.
What you'll do
- Execute conceptual and detailed mechanical design and drawings using 3D solid modeling tools (ProE/Creo). - Conduct engineering analyses including fluid, thermal, vibrational, FEA modeling, and detailed tolerance stack-up analysis using Geometric Tolerancing (GD&T). - Manage prototype part procurement, assembly, testing, and subsystem-to-system integration alongside optics, systems, and manufacturing engineers. - Drive requirement specifications, conduct feasibility studies, and hold technical design reviews throughout the engineering process. - Create assembly and test procedures, manage documentation release, and execute handoffs to manufacturing. - Collaborate with suppliers to verify that component and subsystem designs meet technical requirements.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree with 12+ years of related experience, Master's degree with 8+ years of related experience, or Doctorate with 5+ years of related experience. - Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals including design principles, machine elements, materials, and fabrication methods. - Solid understanding of statics, mechanics of materials, fluid flow, and heat transfer. - Working knowledge of Geometric Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance stack-up analysis. - Experience with manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal forming and fabrication, welding, and castings.
Nice to have
- Experience in 3D solid modeling using Creo or Solidworks. - Experience or knowledge in opto-mechanical systems, vacuum systems, or ultra-high vacuum design. - Experience designing inspection equipment, motion controls, electronics, or tooling and test fixtures. - Familiarity with additive manufacturing (3D printing) and precision machine design. - Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) and supplier management.

How we counted: 3866 open Semiconductor Equipment Engineering (Manufacturing Equipment) roles from 84 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 25 Oct 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Process, Fab & Equipment family row.
