Software Engineer, Terminal Interface - New York City, United States
Originally posted 2 September 2026 by the employer.
This role focuses on an interactive terminal application, built in Python and Textual, for AI-assisted chip verification work.
About the role
This role involves owning and productizing an interactive terminal application that serves as the primary interface for semiconductor engineers performing AI-assisted verification. You will be responsible for the interaction model, information design, and the local session client, acting as a key voice in defining the client API.
What you'll do
- Own interaction across commands, navigation, input/editing, streamed output, and error handling for the terminal application.
- Ensure correct, fast cross-platform behavior across terminals, shells, multiplexers, remote sessions, and various operating systems.
- Define the client boundary, including the local session client and its structured-event interface.
- Establish command, picker, progress, output, and review patterns for other contributors.
- Manage responsiveness under load, including streaming, cancellation, concurrency, and event-loop behavior.
- Evolve a large Textual application towards reusable components and a clear separation of concerns.
What you'll need
- 4+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time building interactive terminal applications or rich local clients.
- Experience improving existing codebases without introducing regressions.
- Familiarity with challenges in terminal software, such as keyboard/text input, rendering performance, and cross-platform behavior.
- Strong engineering fundamentals, with depth and judgment valued over specific Python and Textual experience.
- Experience with event-driven or asynchronous applications, including streaming data, concurrency, and recovery from partial failure.
- A high bar for interface details, including defaults, error messages, and empty states.
- Ability to debug across boundaries, from terminal emulator keystrokes to application runtime.
- Experience testing interactive software and judgment regarding which behaviors to pin down.
- Comfort working with researchers and domain experts, and the ability to learn unfamiliar technical domains.
