About the role
As a Senior Staff Hardware Design Engineer, you will take technical ownership of complex board-level designs from architecture and simulation through bring-up, characterization, and validation. The role develops reference boards and evaluation systems for coherent digital signal processors (DSPs) supporting 400G/800G-per-wavelength optical transmission.
What you'll do
- Design reference boards and evaluation systems supporting 400G/800G-per-wavelength optical transmission, including power delivery, control, clocking, and high-speed I/O. - Architect, simulate, and characterize high-speed interconnects and signal paths exceeding 110 GHz bandwidth, correlating simulation results with laboratory measurements. - Design and simulate power circuits and power distribution networks for coherent DSP platforms. - Lead board bring-up, debugging, and failure analysis alongside hardware and firmware engineers. - Collaborate with PCB layout engineers, fabrication suppliers, and assembly partners to define component placement, layer stack-ups, and routing constraints. - Develop and execute board validation plans, analyze laboratory test results, and produce detailed technical performance reports.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline, with at least five years of relevant experience in high-speed board-level hardware design. - Experience designing systems incorporating power circuits, analog circuitry, clocking, FPGAs, microprocessors, microcontrollers, memory, Ethernet, SerDes, or related technologies. - Proficiency in schematic capture and component library management using OrCAD CIS/CIP, Altium, or equivalent tools. - Experience with high-frequency signal integrity simulation using Ansys HFSS, SIwave, Keysight ADS, or equivalent tools, and characterization using vector network analyzers and time-domain reflectometry. - Experience with analog and power circuit design and simulation using PSpice or equivalent tools. - Hands-on expertise in board bring-up, testing, characterization, and failure analysis using digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.

How we counted: 973 open Hardware Systems Engineering (AI ML Hardware) roles from 101 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 20 Oct 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
