About the role
This role involves driving reliability strategy, qualification, and technology development for advanced photonic devices and Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). You will contribute to Intel Foundry's advanced Silicon Photonics program.
What you'll do
- Assess and characterize the intrinsic and extrinsic reliability of photonic devices, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), lasers, and integrated optical products.
- Develop reliability models and acceleration methodologies through Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and reliability testing.
- Drive reliability improvements through process, design, and material optimization efforts.
- Develop and implement new reliability characterization techniques, screening methodologies, and quality controls.
- Define reliability, qualification, and certification requirements for new silicon photonics technologies and products.
- Lead failure analysis and root cause investigations using data-driven and model-based problem-solving techniques.
What you'll need
- Master's degree in Photonics/Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Semiconductor Engineering, or a related Stem degree with 4+ years of relevant experience; or a PhD in the same field with 2+ years of relevant industry experience.
- 2+ years of silicon photonics, photonic devices, optical devices, or integrated photonics technology development.
- 4+ years of semiconductor device characterization, validation, yield, reliability, or test engineering.
- 4+ years with compound semiconductor processing and photonic device physics.
- 4+ years of reliability engineering, qualification engineering, failure analysis, or technology development within semiconductor or photonics environments.
Nice to have
- PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering fields with 2+ years of experience in photonic devices.
- Process certification/product qualification and reliability risk assessment, quality systems, and quality culture knowledge.
- Semiconductor device physics and defect mechanism knowledge.
- Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes, manufacturing process development, material characterization and development, and design validation.
- Hands-on semiconductor wafer fabrication process and process integration challenges.
- Reliability failure statistics, physics, failure mechanisms, and failure analysis methodologies.
- Experience in SPC/DOE principles, DOEs execution, and statistical analysis.
- Data extraction and analysis skills (JMP/Crystal Ball/ILM/REL/PCS/SQL Scripting).
- Knowledge of photonic datacom and telecom reliability qualification standards such as Telcordia GR-468, AEC-Q102.

How we counted: 427 open Reliability Engineering (Reliability Engineering) roles from 70 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 19 Sept 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Process, Fab & Equipment family row.
