About the role
As an R&D Hardware Engineer on the Digital and Photonics R&D team, you will design and develop hardware for time-domain measurement instruments and high-performance oscilloscopes. The work involves hardware architecture definition, subsystem implementation, and integration of optical and electrical circuits operating from 20 GHz to 200 GHz.
What you'll do
- Define hardware system block diagrams and functional sub-systems for high-performance oscilloscopes and time-domain measurement instruments. - Design and implement instrument hardware subsystems, including optical and electrical frontends, signal sampling subsystems, and clock recovery/phase lock loop circuits operating from 20 GHz to 200 GHz. - Integrate individual hardware designs with analog control, sensing, and adjustment circuitry alongside R&D hardware and software engineering teams. - Invent new IP for instrument designs, author invention disclosures, and prepare patent applications. - Document and present measurement IP, test methodologies, and technical data to cross-functional teams and customers. - Collaborate with new product introduction and technology partner teams to bring designs through the full product development lifecycle into volume manufacturing.
What you'll need
- BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or an equivalent field with emphasis in hardware applied to signal processing and digital communication. - 5 to 10 years of related hardware design experience. - Track record of hardware system block diagram design, partitioning subsystems, defining specifications, and evaluating performance, cost, and implementation tradeoffs. - Demonstrated end-to-end design and implementation of hardware designs featuring circuits operating in the 20 GHz to 200 GHz range. - Hands-on experience configuring optical and electrical measuring instruments to acquire and evaluate sampled signal waveforms.
Nice to have
- Experience with hardware design involving optical components, such as photodiodes, optical-to-electrical converters, and optical communication signal transmission. - Hands-on experience using electronics test equipment to set up signal sampling, execute test scenarios, and verify measurement integrity. - Experience with high-frequency or optical circuit simulation tools, such as ADS. - Experience with designs realized in PC board, high-frequency media such as thin film, and optical structures. - Demonstrated knowledge of design practices to preserve signal integrity and minimize noise. - Experience defining technical specifications for partner technologies such as new ICs or fab processes.

How we counted: 258 open RF/Wireless Engineering (RF Frontend) roles from 34 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 26 Oct 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Analog & Mixed-Signal family row.
