About the role
This role is responsible for electrical subsystem architecture, PCB board design, and high-speed FPGA development for semiconductor inspection and metrology equipment. You will work within the Surfscan division, supporting unpatterned wafer inspection systems that detect nanoscale particles and surface defects.
What you'll do
- Define electrical subsystem requirements, specifications, and interfaces derived from system-level requirements. - Design and prototype analog and digital circuits, capture schematics, and direct PCB board layout. - Design, implement, verify, and optimize high-speed FPGA designs, including high-bandwidth data acquisition, processing, and communication interfaces. - Develop test fixtures, procedures, and test scripts for PCB prototype and FPGA functional testing, qualification, and characterization. - Perform circuit, signal integrity, timing, thermal, power, and FPGA simulations to validate and optimize designs. - Conduct bench-level, subsystem-level, and system-level integration, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting following the DFX Design Process.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 3+ years of experience, a Master's degree with 2+ years of experience, or a PhD with 1+ years of experience in electrical engineering. - Background in analog and digital mixed-signal electronics design, PCB design, and high-speed digital hardware. - Experience in FPGA development using Xilinx or Intel (Altera) platforms, including Verilog and/or VHDL design, simulation, synthesis, implementation, and debugging. - Understanding of FPGA-to-PCB interface design, timing analysis, timing closure, and constraint development. - Hands-on experience with hardware and firmware integration, bench debug, and system-level testing of prototype hardware. - Familiarity with engineering tools such as OrCAD, Xilinx Vivado/ISE, Intel Quartus, Synplify, Questa/ModelSim, Python, or MATLAB.

How we counted: 992 open Hardware Systems Engineering (AI ML Hardware) roles from 104 employers tracked in the SemiconductorJobs index, counted 21 Oct 2026. Specialty figures count only roles carrying this exact specialty label, so an employer's related work in neighbouring specialties is not included there — it is counted in the wider Software, Firmware & Systems family row.
