OpenBMC stack ownership for custom compute boards managing in-house AI ASICs.

About the role

MatX is seeking a BMC Firmware Engineer to own the OpenBMC stack for custom AI compute boards from initial bring-up through high-volume datacenter deployment. The BMC manages in-house AI ASICs across compute, telemetry, thermal and power management, firmware updates, and platform security.

What you'll do

- Design, build, and ship OpenBMC firmware for custom compute boards managing in-house AI ASICs from reference hardware through production. - Own the Yocto/OpenEmbedded-based build, board port, and device trees across U-Boot and the Linux kernel for the BMC SoC. - Develop platform manageability features including telemetry, event logging, fan/thermal/power management via PMBus, and RAS for AI ASICs, CPLDs/FPGAs, PSUs, NICs, and memory. - Implement management interfaces using Redfish, IPMI, and DMTF protocols including MCTP, PLDM, and SPDM for out-of-band management. - Write and bring up Linux kernel drivers and D-Bus/sdbusplus services, debugging across the hardware/firmware boundary using schematics, logic analyzers, and JTAG. - Implement firmware update, secure boot, and attestation flows while reviewing board schematics and hardware architecture for manageability and debuggability.

What you'll need

- 8+ years of experience in BMC firmware and embedded Linux development, with hands-on OpenBMC experience from board bring-up through production. - Strong C/C++ programming skills alongside Python or Bash scripting, and deep Linux fundamentals spanning user space, the driver model, and kernel internals. - Proficiency with Yocto/OpenEmbedded, U-Boot, and device trees, with experience targeting BMC SoCs such as ASPEED or Nuvoton. - Board bring-up experience with low-level interfaces including I2C/I3C, SPI, eSPI/LPC, SMBus, UART, PCIe, and JTAG. - Working knowledge of platform management standards including IPMI/KCS, Redfish, and DMTF protocols such as MCTP, PLDM, and SPDM.

Nice to have

- Experience with pre-silicon validation environments including simulation, emulation, or FPGA prototyping. - First-silicon or new-platform bring-up experience for accelerators, NICs, or SoCs. - Familiarity with SR-IOV, dma-buf, peer-to-peer PCIe, or VFIO. - Kernel performance tuning and profiling experience using perf, ftrace, or eBPF. - Exposure to BMC/host interaction paths including in-band versus out-of-band device access and sideband interfaces like I2C/SMBus. - Experience with Rust for systems programming. - Contributions to OpenBMC, the Linux kernel, or related open-source, OCP, or DMTF efforts.
