Marvell and Lumentum: Hiring Before the Acquisition

Marvell and Lumentum: Hiring Before the Acquisition

Marvell announced on November 2 that it has agreed to acquire Lumentum in an all stock transaction with an implied enterprise value of $115 billion.

The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2028. Until then, Marvell and Lumentum remain separate companies.

Marvell designs custom silicon, network switches, optical DSPs and high speed interconnect products. Lumentum makes lasers, optical transceivers, optical circuit switches and compound semiconductor devices. The deal would combine Marvell’s custom silicon and electrical interconnect products with Lumentum’s optical components and manufacturing.

The companies expect more than $1 billion in annual cost savings, primarily from cost of goods sold, after the deal closes. They have not said what that will mean for jobs.

Our job index provides a baseline. It contains about seven months of posting history for Marvell and Lumentum (since March 16 for Marvell and April 9 for Lumentum), including new, closed, reopened and reposted positions.

Current job postings

As of November 2, our job index tracks 630 active postings across the two companies: 348 at Marvell and 282 at Lumentum. Both totals match the counts on each company’s careers site today.

Company Active worldwide Active US Posted in past 30 days Open more than 90 days Reposted
Marvell 348 174 114 111 92
Lumentum 282 78 77 122 48

Each employer job posting is counted once. The “Reposted” column counts currently active positions that were previously removed and later listed again. The six month figures include all reposted or reopened job postings recorded during that period. “Posted in past 30 days” counts job postings first seen in our index since October 3. “Open more than 90 days” is measured from when we first saw each posting.

How posting activity has changed

During the past six months, our job index first recorded 868 Marvell postings, 1,147 removals and 180 reposted or reopened positions.

During the same period, our job index first recorded 410 Lumentum postings, 379 removals and 134 reposted or reopened positions.

Marvell’s open postings peaked at about 710 in June before dropping to about 150 in one step at the end of August. Our data cannot determine whether Marvell removed the positions or reorganized its careers site. The count has risen every week since then and stands at 348 today. Lumentum moved the other way: its open postings rose from about 190 in July to 282 today, with October its busiest month for new postings at 105.

A removed posting should not be treated as a completed hire. Employers also remove positions when budgets change, job postings expire or the same job is posted again under a new number.

What the two companies are hiring for

The current openings show how different the two engineering organizations are.

Engineering discipline Marvell Lumentum
Digital and RTL design 17 0
SoC and chip architecture 6 0
Design verification 10 0
Embedded firmware 20 7
Photonics and optical design 10 10
Analog and mixed signal design 20 1
Packaging and integration 12 5
Process and device engineering 1 25
Manufacturing and equipment engineering 5 85
Silicon test and validation 48 14

The table shows selected engineering categories and does not include every engineering posting. Some rows combine related disciplines, including silicon test with validation and manufacturing with equipment engineering. Marvell also has 60 non-engineering postings and Lumentum has 71.

Marvell’s combined test and validation category includes 30 positions classified as Silicon Test Engineering. Lumentum’s combined manufacturing and equipment category includes 54 Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering positions and 31 Semiconductor Equipment Engineering positions.

Marvell’s largest engineering groups are hardware systems engineering (34), silicon test engineering (30) and embedded firmware (20).

At Lumentum, the largest are manufacturing and industrial engineering (54), semiconductor equipment engineering (31) and product engineering (19).

That difference is the point of the transaction. Marvell is strongest in digital silicon and data movement. Lumentum adds the lasers, optical devices and manufacturing needed to turn electrical signals into optical connections.

Where their technical work overlaps

Some areas already appear in job descriptions at both companies.

Technology mentioned in job descriptions Marvell Lumentum
Silicon photonics 44 11
Optical DSP or coherent optics 44 9
SerDes or PAM4 78 3
Lasers or indium phosphide 12 76
Optical circuit switching 0 4
Advanced packaging 52 9
AI data center connectivity 114 41

These categories can overlap. One position may mention several technologies.

The two companies have depth in different places. Marvell mentions SerDes or PAM4 in 78 postings and Lumentum in 3. Lumentum mentions lasers or indium phosphide in 76 postings and Marvell in 12. Silicon photonics is the clearest shared area: it appears in 44 Marvell postings and 11 at Lumentum. Optical circuit switching appears only at Lumentum.

Where the jobs are

Marvell’s largest hiring locations are:

  1. Santa Clara, California: 140
  2. Singapore: 49
  3. Bangalore, India: 31
  4. Cordoba, Argentina: 16
  5. Hsinchu, Taiwan: 14

Lumentum’s largest hiring locations are:

  1. Pathumthani (Navanakorn), Thailand: 102
  2. San Jose, California: 59
  3. Sagamihara, Japan: 27
  4. Towcester, United Kingdom: 21
  5. Ottawa, Canada: 19

Marvell’s largest listed locations are primarily design and test centers. Santa Clara, its headquarters, carries most of the hardware systems and silicon test work. Singapore leans toward silicon test and product engineering. Bangalore has platform software and EDA/CAD roles, while Cordoba and Hsinchu add digital design, physical design and firmware.

Lumentum’s largest listed locations include several manufacturing sites. Navanakorn in Thailand is mostly manufacturing, product engineering and technician roles. Sagamihara hires laser design, wafer process and equipment staff. Towcester is a wafer process and equipment site. San Jose combines manufacturing and equipment roles with business office positions, and Ottawa hires firmware and FPGA engineers.

Positions open more than 90 days

Our job index shows 111 Marvell positions and 122 Lumentum positions that have remained open for more than 90 days. Age alone does not prove that a position is difficult to fill.

The longest open technical positions include:

Position Company Location Days open Reposts
Senior Staff Hardware Engineer, Optical Marvell Santa Clara, California 231 1
Principal Advanced Packaging Design Engineer Marvell Burlington, Vermont 231 1
Laser Design Engineer Lumentum Sagamihara, Japan 207 0
Quality Engineer, Semiconductor Wafer Fab Lumentum Greensboro, North Carolina 207 1

Days open are counted from when each posting first appeared in our index, so the oldest figures reflect the start of our tracking and the true age may be longer.

Published US salaries

Of the current US positions, 110 of 174 at Marvell and 66 of 78 at Lumentum publish pay ranges.

Company Published ranges Median listed minimum Median listed maximum
Marvell 92 annual $140,885 $209,000
Lumentum 40 annual $112,050 $166,000

The medians use annual ranges only. Marvell also lists 18 hourly ranges, all for internships, and Lumentum lists 26 hourly ranges for a mix of technician, production and internship roles. These figures are advertised base salaries. They exclude bonuses and equity and reflect different combinations of positions and experience levels.

What we will track after the announcement

The deal is not expected to close until 2028, so today’s job postings reflect two separate companies.

Over the next several months, we will track:

  • New and removed positions at each company
  • Reposted and reopened job postings
  • Changes in optical, photonics and custom silicon hiring
  • Changes at locations where both companies employ related teams
  • Whether long open positions remain active

The announcement explains the reason for the deal. The job data will show whether hiring changes before it closes.

Job counts are from our job index as of November 2, 2026. Each employer job posting is counted once. Removed postings are not treated as confirmed hires. Keyword categories can overlap.

These searches cover employers across our job board, not just Marvell and Lumentum.
